Transmission Repair
What you need to know about auto transmission repair
Given how frequently your car changes gears during even casual driving, transmission repair is something most vehicle owners must eventually face. When it comes to transmissions, it is very important that you have minor problems repaired early, before they have a chance to escalate. This can keep your transmission repair cost down, as minor repairs are relatively affordable, at least compared to the cost of replacing the entire system – something you might have to do if you wait too long.
With both manual and automatic transmission repair, there are warning signs you can look for to detect problems early. Knowing how to spot a potential transmission problem is a skill every car owner needs.
Common Transmission Warning Signs
There are a few warning signs that are common to both manual and automatic transmissions. The first is leaking transmission fluid, which has a unique, easy-to-recognize pinkish-red color. If, when you move your parked vehicle, you notice this fluid collected on the pavement, it might be time to get an inspection – leaking fluid is one of the surest signs of an impending problem or transmission failure.
Similarly, if your transmission fluid isn't pinkish-red but instead has a dark brown or black hue, it is a sign that the fluid is burning up during shifting. This indicates that you have a problem that needs immediate attention.
If you ever experience gear shifting delays, which manifest as a lag between the time you actually change gears and the time the car recognizes the shift, then it's time to drive to a mechanic or repair center for a car inspection, because this lag indicates severe wear and a potential total transmission failure.
Specific Problems in Manual and Automatic Transmissions
There are some additional symptoms of a bad transmission that are unique to either manual or automatic configurations. If you have a stick shift, watch your clutch – if it fails to engage, or cannot engage higher gears, a visit to one of your local transmission repair shops should be in your near future. Similarly, if you experience difficulties shifting gears, or hear clanging sounds while you're idling, you may have a transmission problem that requires attention.
Signs that you may need automatic transmission repair include late shifting and gear slippage. With late shifting, note in particular the RPM level you must reach to get the transmission to shift into second gear. The higher it gets, the more worn your transmission is. Automatic transmission slippage occurs when your engine revs up as it should, yet your wheels are not supplied with the power they need to move you at the corresponding rate of speed. This is a serious problem which will require the immediate attention of an auto transmission repair specialist.
